The English Northeast clubs would have preferred a derby day that wasn’t marred with relegation talk but yet again Sunderland and neighbours Newcastle United find themselves in the bottom three.

Premier League veteran boss Sam Allardyce has taken over at struggling Sunderland after Dutchman Dick Advocaat walked away from the job a few weeks ago. He has never been relegated from the English top flight and Sunderland supporters will be hoping that run continues.

Bug Sam will be hoping that history will repeat itself after former bosses Paulo Di Canio, Gus Poyet and Advocaat all picked up valuable wins over their local rivals.

The Toon recorded their first win of the season last weekend when they hammered Norwich City 6-2 at St James’ Park. New Magpies manager Steve McClaren really needed that positive result ahead of the Tyne-Wear derby.

In that big Newcastle victory over the Canaries £14.5m summer signing Georginio Wijnaldum bagged an impressive four goals. Bwin are offering 8/1 for the midfielder to score the first goal against Sunderland. While Bet365 have odds of 150/1 on him scoring a hat-trick.

Big Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic has two in his last two Toon games and looks to be finally settling in at his new club. You can get him at 40/17 to score at anytime on Sunday afternoon.

If you think that this powder keg of a fixture can see a goal within the first fifteen minutes then Sportingbet are offering you 20/1 on that happening. Alternatively you may think that both underperforming teams will cancel each other out and it could end 0-0, which is available at 10/1 with Betfair.

Sunderland will be praying that they can record their first victory of the season and climb off bottom spot.

The Black Cats have yet to secure a clean sheet but if you think that will change on Sunday then you can get odds of 12/5 from Bet365.

Steven Fletcher scored four times in his last two Scotland appearances earlier this month; he also started in Sunderland’s last game. Paddy Power are offering 7/1 on the forward getting the first against Newcastle this weekend.

Jermain Defoe got the winner the last time these two sides met and if you believe he can hit the net again during Sunday’s clash then you can get him at 23/10 anytime.

Recent history suggests that Sunderland may have the ability to secure their new gaffer a first victory this weekend. But Magpies boss McClaren has a decent record against Big Sam including a League Cup final triumph.

Obviously being a derby encounter and having volatile players like Lee Cattermole and Mitrovic on the field, then there could be a red card within the game. Marathon Bet are offering 2/1 that someone will be sent off.
I think this could be a score draw. You can get 1-1 at 13/2 and 2-2 is higher at 15/1.

If you think that Sunderland can get that elusive first victory of the season this weekend then Coral are offering 8/5. A draw with Bet Victor is 12/5. If you think Steve McClaren can mastermind a second win on the trot then Marathon Bet are giving you odds of 31/16. There's no special offers for this event listed right now.
